Welcome
Kyusik Kim, Ph.D.
Hello! I am an Assistant Professor of Geographic Information Science in the Department of Geography and Anthropology at Kennesaw State University (KSU), focusing on transport and health issues. I received a Ph.D. in Geography from Florida State University (FSU) in 2023. Before joining KSU, I was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Geography.
My research interests lie at the intersection of spatial accessibility, healthcare (e.g., emergency medical services (EMS)), and human mobility. I explore questions such as: How can spatial access to healthcare be measured more accurately? How do urban-rural configurations influence EMS accessibility and health outcomes? And how does human mobility shape spatial accessibility and reflect responses to natural hazards? Using tools and methods from GIS, I seek to better understand human geographic phenomena and offer insights with direct policy relevance.
My works have been published in several prestigious peer-reviewed journals, including the Annals of the American Association of Geographers, Geographical Analysis, Journal of Transport Geography, Transactions in GIS, and Journal of Transport & Health.
*I am looking for students who want to have research experiences. Please reach out to me if you are interested in joining our team.
Primary areas of research

Developing Reliable Spatial Accessibility Measures
How can we measure more reliable place-based spatial accessibility? Considering time-varying features and travel mode choices, we develop methodological approaches to identifying people and areas vulnerable to potential opportunities.
What do we focus on?
- Spatiotemporal variations in demand, supply, and transport network connectivity
- Measuring spatial accessibility based on choices

Spatial Access to Emergency Medical Services
Regarding multiple trip segments and golden hours concepts in EMS, measuring spatial access to EMS has unique characteristics. Addressing the uniqueness, we aim to better understand the delivery of EMS. Thus, we are focusing on examining the impact of the chain process on spatial access to EMS, exploring the relationships between spatial access and emergency survival rates, and measuring nationwide spatial access levels in EMS.
